Journalism Courses

What is journalism?

Journalism is the process of reporting current events and news to the public. Journalism courses are one of the best ways to get started in journalism, as a way to find out if it’s something you want to pursue whether you’d want to go onto further education in the area or even just as a hobby for online blogs or writing. Due to the nature of the work, and an increasingly digital world, there are online journalism courses available at a number of institutions around Australia, including TAFE courses.

Studying journalism:

Journalism is a highly respected field, and because of this, there is a high demand for degrees like a Bachelor of Media and Communication or a Bachelor of Journalism. This means that these degrees can have really high enter scores and are regularly in demand. A short course is a perfect way to study journalism and get some experience in the area before dedicating yourself to a full degree, or alternatively as a pathway to university. If you choose to study journalism courses at TAFE or other institutions, some may offer a specialty course, like digital journalism or international journalism. Possible courses include:

  • Certificate in Entertainment Journalism
  • Certificate in Journalism
  • Short course in creative writing
  • Short course in Journalism

After completing a short course, you can go on to study either a university degree or even a more advanced course, like a TAFE Media and Communication course. There are a range of opportunities for further education as a lead on from a short course if you want to continue down the journalism career path.

Careers in journalism:

If you choose to study journalism online or in person, or a blend of both, it can be the start of a truly rewarding career, with a huge range of possible job pathways and trajectories all over the world and domestically. Any of the following careers would benefit from a short course in journalism:

  • Digital Journalist
  • TV Reporter
  • Writer/Author
  • Sports Journalist
  • Foreign Correspondent
  • Newspaper Journalist
  • Editor

Is a career in journalism right for you?

With so many opportunities to study in person or online, journalism is a study option that anyone can participate in. There are, however, a few key skills that journalists need. The most important thing is a questioning, curious mind, as being a journalist will require you to investigate and discover a wide range of events, stories, and news.
