Our CHC50121 – Diploma in Early Childhood Education and Care course is designed to train students in all aspects of childcare, from providing for care to babies, toddlers and children including assisting with routines, facilitating play to planning and implementing programs that support children’s development.

Some of the advanced skills you will learn in this course is how to make sure a facility follows the regulations of the National Quality Framework , management and leadership, health and safety management and develop and implement curriculum and programs for children including those with additional needs. The course has an ideal balance of theory and practical skills to ensure your confidence to advance in the workplace.

Duration study load

  • The course is delivered over 29 weekly sessions
  • Self-paced learning, which is approximately 15 hours per week
  • It is expected that the course could take you 12 months to complete, though this can vary from person to person
  • 280 hours of practical placement with 2 assessor workplace visits

Delivery

The following delivery methods are available:

  • Blended: Live online classes via teams + assessor workplace visits. You will require a computer with a camera and microphone to undertake this delivery option.
  • Classroom Based: All sessions delivered in one of our classroom locations in Melbourne.

Entry requirements

  • Must have completed the CHC30121 Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care or CHC30113 Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care

  • Availability to attend classes and placement (this course is not self-paced)

  • Complete a pre-training review & language literacy and numeracy test (entry AQF level 4)

  • Confident in the ability to use digital resources (email, online research, digital assessments, Zoom)

  • Access to a computer and the internet (online classes will require cameras and microphones)

  • Obtain a Working With Children Check (WWCC) prior to undertaking placement

  • Ability to travel to and from placement

Work placement

Practical placement is on the job training that you undertake during your course. This is a fantastic opportunity to practice the skills you are learning in the classroom in a supported manner.

This course requires you to complete 280 hours in the workplace. A workplace trainer will visit you in the workplace to observe and assess competency in skills towards the end of your placement hours.

Recognition of prior learning

You can ask for your relevant existing skills, qualifications and experiences to be assessed and taken into account when your level of competency is being evaluated. There will be a cost associated, refer to the statement of fees and charges.

If you have previously completed a unit with the same code as your new course, you will be eligible for a credit transfer and you will not have to repeat that unit. There is no cost associated with this process.

All learning content and assessments are on Canvas our Learning Management System (LMS).

  • Theory questions and quizzes
  • Projects, assignments and case studies
  • Log book of hours completed during placement
  • Practical demonstrations in simulation and the workplace
  • Oral questions
  • Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), Recognition of Current Competency (RCC) and Credit Transfer (CT) are available

Payment options

You may be eligible for a Victorian government-subsidised place through the Skills First Program we are contracted to deliver. Course fees & costs depend on whether you are eligible for a government subsidy with fund made available by the Victorian & Commonwealth Governments.

Basic Funding Eligibility Criteria (other conditions may apply):

(1) Evidence of citizenship/residency, you must be either:

  1. an Australian citizen;
  2. a holder of a permanent visa; or
  3. a New Zealand citizen

(2) You can enrol in a maximum of 2 funded qualifications and 2 funded skills sets in one year

(3) You can undertake up to 2 funded programs at one time

(4) We require you to be 17 and over and not enrolled in high school to access funding

Tuition Fees:

Skills First Funded

  • $400 upfront or $40 per week for 10 weeks on a payment plan

Fee for Service (FFS)

  • $4,000 or $100 per week for 40 weeks on a payment plan

Discount for Fee for Service

  • 25% OFF for upfront payment or pay $1,000 upfront plus $50 per week for 40 weeks on a payment plan
